A message from OE CEO Neil Samahon:

"Thank you for being a supporter of people with disabilities through Opportunity Enterprises!

I have a daughter with an intellectual disability.  My daughter is quite self-sufficient and we are are lucky that she is able to care for herself fairly easily. That is not the case for many families whose child has a more severe disability.  As the CEO of OE I see this everyday.  Someone has to be there to care for these adults when their parents can’t do it alone, or when they no longer have family to care for them.

Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) are the frontline staff who assist those with I/DD’s. Like a nurse or a doctor – other people’s lives are in their hands day in and day out. They are responsible for medications, being their voice and their advocate, sitting bedside if they are sick, making meals, and caring for their most basic needs.  It’s a 24/7 job that doesn’t go away in times of crisis.

At times like this, when our most vulnerable population needs even more care – DSPs are stepping up to serve.  To limit potential exposure to our clients, many of OE’s DSPs are sacrificing time with their own families to live with a client for up to 14 days in a row! As CEO of this organization, I am both proud and in awe by the commitment these men and women have to our clients.

This current public health crisis could potentially break the systems society has in place to serve many of us. It is illustrating how fragile this system is and it underscores DSPs value and how essential these professionals are.

As you may know, we have had to temporarily suspend our day programs. While this allows us to have staff available to serve around the clock in our client's residences, it also means an extraordinary loss of income. Your donations go directly to pay for staff to be available to care for those most in need during this time of crisis.

Please consider a gift today to support the extraordinary work of our Direct Support Professionals who are putting their lives on hold to care for the most vulnerable.

You are an amazing part of OE's services, we couldn't do it without your support!"

If you're not able to make a financial contribution at this time, please consider donating goods to help these amazing individuals be able to live healthy and constructive lives during this time. Visit oppent.org/donategoods to see items needed.
